Dollar’s good. Look for online offers if you pay by charge.

No one rental company has the lowest rates across the board. Your best bet is to check on Expedia.com or Orbitz.com and see what rates come up. Get insurance at least the minimum – you usually have two levels of insurance to purchase, just liability or the full package – it can add as much as $15 per day or more to the rental. Also, if you are going to rent for more than three days, sometimes it is actually less expensive if you get a full weekly rate – compare prices to be sure.

I agree that you should check out orbitz, expedia, priceline, etc. to get a rough estimate of rates. If those sites are charging additional fees, you can often avoid them by reserving directly through the rental car company’s website. Also, do a google search for “(company) coupons”….you can often use the resulting coupon codes for discounts when reserving online. Generally speaking, I have found Enterprise to be the cheapest (although I have never reserved a car at San Diego airport). I have also had success with “naming my own price” at priceline (I offered about half of the listed rate and it was accepted). Before you officially submit your price, they will give you a summary of the total fees, etc. (I don’t think it includes insurance, though, so that may be an additional charge—if you choose it—at the rental car office).

If you have car insurance, call your insurance company to ask if you are covered in a rental car. If so, you don’t need to buy the additional insurance (but if you have an accident, it will go through your insurance and you will have to pay your deductible). You can also buy insurance from the rental car company. The basic coverage is usually ~$15 and covers the rental car only (so if the car is damaged, they won’t go through your insurance, but damage to another person’s car, injuries, etc. aren’t usually covered). If your insurance is from outside of the U.S., it might be worth paying for the extra insurance to avoid any potential hassles if an accident or damage occurs.

The agencies located at the airport are often a bit more expensive (more taxes and fees). Finding a “neighborhood” office of the same company may result in lower rates, but then you have the hassle of getting yourself to the neighborhood office. Since you are only renting for one day, an off-site/neighborhood office probably won’t save you enough money to make up for the hassle.
